The Current Threats to the Great Barrier Reef
Crown of thorns starfish- The crown of thorns starfish is a predator that feeds on coral polyps. Sometimes their numbers can get out of control which results in part of the coral reef being destroyed.
Coral Bleaching- Coral is sensitive to intense heat. When the temperature gets too high, the algae dies. The loss of the coral's algae can leave the coral colourless as the algae is what gives coral its colour. This means lots of coral reefs will die.
Oil Spills- Oil spills kill coral reefs. Even though oil drilling is banned in the Great Barrier Reef, oil spills still occur. Between 1987-2002, 282 oil spills occurred.
Tourists- Reef walking, dropping anchors and pollution can damage the wonderful but fragile coral reefs. Also, perspiration and suntan lotions can have a negative effect on the Great Barrier Reef.
Water Quality- Water has become contaminated because of chemicals from human waste and industrial. Approximately 400 coral reefs are in danger of contamination.
These are just a few threats to the wonderful and beautiful Great Barrier Reef.
